NTU Career Tracks 2026

Start Your First Job on the Right Note

Congratulations on securing your first job! Starting strong helps set the foundation for your career success. Follow these tips to make a great impression and adapt quickly to your new workplace.

ENGAGE YOUR SUPERVISOR

Establish clear work objectives and priorities early on. Take the initiative to schedule regular check-ins with your supervisor to review progress and clarify expectations. Use digital tools such as shared calendars or task managers to stay organised and track deliverables.

Do not hesitate to ask questions or seek guidance. Supervisors value proactive learners. Demonstrate curiosity and initiative but also take responsibility for following through on tasks independently.

CONTRIBUTE AND LEARN

Be an active contributor from day one. Offer thoughtful ideas and constructive suggestions, volunteer for new projects, and be receptive to feedback (both good and bad). Be humble and adopt a growth mindset. Treat every task and challenge as an opportunity to learn.

Seek feedback regularly, not only during formal reviews. Ask colleagues and managers for suggestions on how you can improve or add value. Staying open-minded and reflective will help you develop quickly.

BE A TEAM PLAYER

Build positive relationships and collaborate effectively with your colleagues, both in person and online. Be supportive, share credit for team successes and maintain professionalism in all communication channels (including emails and messaging apps).

Avoid gossip and stay respectful of differing opinions. Listening actively and showing empathy will help you earn trust and establish yourself as a reliable team member.

IMMERSE IN THE COMPANY CULTURE

Participate in all onboarding activities and observe your colleagues to understand the company culture. Keep to the organisation’s norms regarding communication, work hours and protocols for time off. When in doubt, always seek your colleagues’ advice.

Make an effort to reach out to your colleagues who can help you acclimatise quickly to your new role. Set up individual meetings to get to know your colleagues better, understand what their roles are and how you can support them. Beyond the official onboarding process, these interactions may offer insights into the unspoken rules and expectations of the workplace.

BUILD YOUR NETWORK

Building your professional network is key to long-term career success. Attend company events, join professional associations and engage with colleagues across departments. Use LinkedIn and online industry groups to stay connected, share insights, and build your professional presence.

A strong network can open doors to collaboration and future opportunities.

EMBRACE LIFELONG LEARNING

Even as a new graduate, it is important to continue developing relevant skills to advance your career. Continuous learning is essential in a fast-changing world of work. Stay updated on industry developments and emerging technologies, especially on digital, data and AI tools that are transforming many sectors.

Take advantage of your company’s training resources or explore online platforms for upskilling. Strengthen both your technical and soft skills such as communication, critical thinking and adaptability.

Congratulations once again on embarking on your career journey! Stay humble, curious and proactive. Keep learning, take initiative and embrace every experience as a chance to grow — you have got what it takes to shine.
