HOW DID YOU COME ACROSS THIS INTERNSHIP AND WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THIS INTERNSHIP?

I first came across this internship through a friend whom I had worked with on a university project. Knowing that I was looking for internship opportunities, he referred me to the company he did his internship in, Johnson & Johnson.

The role I applied for was the APAC Business Analyst Intern position, which required a six-month commitment. Since this meant taking a Leave of Absence (LOA) from NTU for one semester, I was initially hesitant because I was unsure of how it might affect my studies.

However, after a virtual meeting with the hiring manager and learning more about the scope of the role, I became confident that the internship would allow me to gain valuable work experience and develop skills beyond the classroom. Considering the learning opportunities and growth potential, I decided to take a leap of faith and pursued the internship.

WHAT WERE YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITES AS AN INTERN?

As an APAC Business Analyst Intern, I was part of the Data and Analytics team within the Business Intelligence Department. My initial responsibilities involved developing, publishing and maintaining business dashboards on the Tableau Server to visualise key business metrics.

When new dashboards or data projects were requested by internal stakeholders, I collaborated with them to define the required business metrics and used SQL and Tableau to perform data wrangling and visualisation tasks.

A few months into my internship, my team was assigned to support the development of a Learning Management System (LMS) for eyecare professionals across the Singapore, Australia and New Zealand markets. In this project, I coordinated with 27 stakeholders from five teams, capturing business requirements as user stories using JIRA, a project management tool. I then worked closely with the SCRUM team to develop these user stories across several sprints.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE?

This internship truly broadened my horizons as I was exposed to multiple disciplines ranging from business intelligence to UI/UX and project management. I also gained firsthand experience in how these areas come together to create a digital product that delivers meaningful impact to its target audience.

What I appreciated most was the supportive environment and the opportunity to work alongside experts in my department. My supervisor placed great trust in me and gave me significant ownership over the projects I was involved in, such as allowing me to conduct demo sessions for business stakeholders and host Tableau workshops to help upskill internal teams. The empowerment she gave me greatly enhanced my learning experience.

WHAT WERE SOME CHALLENGES YOU FACED AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?

When I first started my internship, I was unfamiliar with tools such as Tableau and Figma. I initially found it challenging to understand the complex functions and calculations used in the business dashboards. To overcome this, I persevered by watching video tutorials, reading guides and seeking help from my supervisor and stakeholders whenever I encountered difficulties. Over time, I became more confident using the software and was even able to answer queries from colleagues.

As I had no prior exposure to Agile methodologies, I was initially unsure of my responsibilities. To overcome this, I frequently consulted the Scrum Master, my supervisor and colleagues from other projects to understand best practices and what high-quality deliverables looked like. Through this process, I gradually adapted to the Agile framework and successfully delivered quality work for the project.

HOW DID CAO HELP YOU IN PREPARING FOR YOUR FUTURE WORK?

I took part in the NTU PEAK Leadership Development Programme about six months after completing my internship. NTU PEAK provides a platform for students to work in interdisciplinary teams to solve real-world challenges posed by companies from various industries.

For me, the greatest takeaway from NTU PEAK was the experience of collaborating with external stakeholders and working effectively in an interdisciplinary team. The programme simulated an environment similar to the LMS project I worked on during my internship, where experts from different backgrounds came together to create and deliver a meaningful product. Learning to thrive in an interdisciplinary environment and developing soft skills have given me a strong foundation for my future career.

WHAT ARE YOUR KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS INTERNSHIP?

Besides acquiring new technical skills and honing soft skills such as stakeholder management, I believe the biggest takeaway from my internship was developing an attitude of continuous learning. When entering a new environment, be it our first job or a different department, there will always be new skills and knowledge to acquire. The process is rarely easy and challenges are inevitable. However, we should embrace these challenges and strive to master new skills and concepts, excelling in whatever we set out to do. I believe that continually learning and improving ourselves not only enables us to perform better in our roles but also contributes to our overall personal and professional growth.

SHARE ADVICE WITH YOUR PEERS.

Go into your internships with an open heart and mind. Be proactive, be kind and be genuine. Learn as much as you can and most importantly, enjoy yourselves in the process.

Besides picking up new skills and experiences, internships are great opportunities to discover more about yourself – your passions, your likes and your dislikes. It is ultimately this journey of self-discovery that adds colour to our lives and with a better understanding of our values, strengths and areas for improvement, this will serve us well as we go about our journeys.
